What You'll Learn
Why This Matters
Most people's first conversation with an AI assistant is either underwhelming or oddly magical, depending on luck rather than understanding. Knowing what Claude actually is — and isn't — means you stop guessing and start using it deliberately from day one. This guide is the foundation everything else in this course builds on.
The Concept
Claude is a conversational AI assistant made by Anthropic. You talk to it in plain written language — no code, no special commands — and it replies in plain written language back. Under the hood, Claude is a large language model: it has been trained on huge amounts of text and learned to predict and generate helpful, coherent responses. It doesn't "know" things the way a database does; it generates its answer fresh, word by word, based on patterns it learned and whatever you've told it in the conversation.
You can access Claude in a few ways. The simplest is the web browser version at claude.ai, or the Claude mobile app — both are just a chat window where you type and Claude replies. That's all you need for this course's first level. Later in this course, you'll meet more advanced surfaces — Projects (for organising ongoing work), Skills (reusable instructions Claude can follow), Cowork, and Claude Code (for working directly with files and software) — but there's no need to think about any of those yet.
Claude is genuinely capable: it can write, summarise, explain, brainstorm, analyse, and hold a coherent conversation. But it is not infallible. It can get facts wrong, especially on specific dates, statistics, niche details, or anything that requires up-to-the-minute information it can't look up. It can sound confident while being incorrect — this is sometimes called "hallucinating." The fix isn't to distrust Claude entirely; it's to verify anything that actually matters before you rely on it.
Step-by-Step
Example
You: "What's a good way to structure a weekly team update email?"
Claude: gives you a clear structure — e.g. headline summary, wins, blockers, next steps — with a short explanation of why that order works.
That's a reasonable, low-risk first use: no critical facts at stake, just useful structure and ideas.
Try This
Open Claude right now and ask it something you'd normally Google — then ask a follow-up question based on its answer, just like a real conversation.

I'm new to using Claude. Can you:
1. Briefly explain what you can help me with
2. Give me 3 example tasks you'd be useful for in [YOUR JOB / AREA OF LIFE]
3. Ask me one question to help tailor your help to what I actually needCommon Mistakes
Level-Up Tip
Claude performs noticeably better when you treat it like a capable colleague you're briefing, not a search engine you're querying — the more clearly you explain what you're trying to achieve, the better the help you'll get. That's exactly what Guide 02 covers next.
