What You'll Learn

What Cowork is, how it's different from a normal Claude chat, and when it's actually worth reaching for.

Why This Matters

Everything so far — Projects, Skills, Artifacts, Connectors — still runs inside a back-and-forth chat: you ask, Claude answers, you ask again. Some work isn't shaped like that. It's multi-step, spans several files or tools, and would take you many separate chat turns to walk through manually. Cowork is built for that kind of work.

The Concept

Important: Cowork requires a paid plan. It's available on Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise — it is not available on the free plan.

Claude Cowork is an agentic system that brings Claude Code-style agentic capability to knowledge work beyond coding: organising files, synthesising research, producing documents, running data analysis, and other multi-step tasks. You get visibility and control over what Claude is doing as it works, rather than just receiving a finished reply.

How it differs from a normal chat:

  • Normal chat: one exchange at a time — you ask, Claude responds, you decide the next step.
  • Cowork: you hand over a larger, multi-step task; Claude works through it more autonomously across several steps, while you can see what it's doing and step in if needed.
  • Cowork runs in the cloud and is available on desktop, web and mobile, though some features are desktop-only.

    Step-by-Step

  • Confirm you're on a paid plan — Cowork won't be available on free.
  • Start a Cowork task when you have a genuinely multi-step job, not a single question.
  • Describe the end goal and any constraints clearly, as you would briefing a colleague you won't be able to check in with every step.
  • Watch the visibility it gives you into what it's doing as it works — this is where you catch it heading in the wrong direction early.
  • Step in and redirect if something's off, rather than waiting for a finished result that's wrong.
  • Review the final output the way you would a colleague's work, before using it.
  • Example

You need to go through a folder of 40 client testimonials, pull out the usable quotes, group them by theme, and produce a formatted one-page summary document. Done manually through chat, that's dozens of back-and-forth messages. Handed to Cowork as one task, Claude works through the files, organises them, and produces the document, while you can watch its progress and intervene if it misreads what "usable" means to you.

    Try This

Think of one task on your plate right now that involves several steps or several files, and that you'd normally break into many separate chat requests. Before reaching for Cowork, ask yourself: is this genuinely multi-step, or is it really just one request in disguise? If it's genuinely multi-step, try handing the whole thing to Cowork as a single brief.

    Copy This

TASK FOR COWORK: [THE OVERALL OUTCOME YOU WANT]

INPUTS: [FILES / FOLDERS / TOOLS INVOLVED]

    STEPS INVOLVED (roughly):
    1. [STEP]
    2. [STEP]
    3. [STEP]

CONSTRAINTS: [FORMAT, TONE, LENGTH, THINGS TO AVOID]

CHECK IN WITH ME IF: [WHEN YOU WANT TO BE CONSULTED MID-TASK]

    Common Mistakes

  • Expecting Cowork to be available on a free account.
  • Handing over a single simple question as if it needs Cowork, when a normal chat would do.
  • Walking away completely instead of using the visibility Cowork gives you to catch issues early.
  • Giving a vague end goal and assuming Cowork will infer the constraints you care about.
  • Level-Up Tip

Use chat (or a quick Artifact) for anything you can finish in one or two exchanges. Reach for Cowork when the task has real multiple steps, spans multiple files or tools, and would otherwise cost you a long chat session — that's where the autonomy and visibility actually pay off.

    Action Checklist

○Confirm your plan includes Cowork access (Pro/Max/Team/Enterprise)
○Identify one genuinely multi-step task on your plate
○Brief it clearly, with constraints, as a single task
○Monitor progress and redirect if needed, rather than waiting blind
○Review the final output before using it

    LEVEL 3 CHECKPOINT

You should now understand Claude as a work environment — not just a chat box — and know which surface (chat, Projects, Skills, Artifacts, Connectors, Cowork) fits a given piece of work.

Note: availability of some features in this level depends on your Claude plan — each guide above states this plainly rather than assuming everyone has access.
