Centum Electronics

The Bangalore Electronics Company That Embedded Itself in Space, Defence and 5G

THE MOMENT

An electronics assembly for a spacecraft must survive the vibration of a rocket launch, the vacuum of space, the temperature cycling of orbiting between sunlight and shadow hundreds of times per mission, and the radiation environment beyond Earth's magnetosphere — all without any possibility of maintenance or repair. The electronics board that fails on a satellite costing hundreds of crores cannot be replaced. It must be right, first time, and remain right for the satellite's entire operational life.

Centum Electronics makes those assemblies. From Bangalore. To aerospace-grade standards. And it has been doing so long enough that ISRO trusts its work on India's most important space missions.

The Playbook Move

Move 6 — Earn Global Validation

The Centum Adetel acquisition earned Centum European defence electronics certification — the most rigorous quality validation available to any electronics manufacturer.

“Space taught us what quality means. 5G is paying us to apply that lesson at commercial scale.”

THE COMPANY BEFORE

Centum Electronics was founded in 1994 in Bangalore — in the heart of India's electronics and defence ecosystem — as an electronics manufacturing services company focused on the high-reliability segment: defence, space, and industrial applications where consumer electronics quality standards are simply not sufficient.

The distinction between high-reliability electronics and consumer electronics is not primarily technical — it is process and quality system discipline. The IPC-A-610 Class 3 standard for military and aerospace electronics, the MIL-SPEC qualification requirements, and the traceability documentation that space applications demand require manufacturing processes calibrated for defect rates measured in parts per million, not percent.

THE CRISIS

Centum's challenge was the classical high-reliability electronics paradox: the customers most willing to pay premium prices for quality (defence and space) procure in low volumes and on long timescales; the customers who procure in high volumes (commercial electronics) are not willing to pay the premium that high-reliability manufacturing requires.

The capital investment in high-reliability manufacturing — automated optical inspection, X-ray inspection, conformal coating, vacuum reflow soldering — is economically justified only if the volume is sufficient. Defence and space volume alone is typically insufficient; commercial volume must supplement the utilisation.

THE LEADERSHIP DECISION

The Centum Adetel acquisition — buying a French defence electronics company — was the strategic internationalisation that gave Centum European defence customer access and the credibility of manufacturing in Europe that global defence primes increasingly require of their supply chain.

The 5G commercial electronics entry — manufacturing radio units and antenna assemblies for 5G telecom infrastructure — was the volume supplement that justified Centum's capital investment in advanced electronics manufacturing at scale.

THE STRATEGIC PIVOT

Centum's pivot was from an India-focused defence and space electronics manufacturer to a global high-reliability electronics company — with manufacturing in India, Europe, and partnerships across multiple geographies, serving defence, space, and commercial 5G infrastructure.

The 5G and defence convergence — as military communications increasingly uses commercial wireless technology standards — creates products that serve both markets simultaneously, improving Centum's scale economics.

MARKET REACTION

ISRO and DRDO supply relationships spanning decades validate Centum's space and defence electronics quality. The European acquisition validates that Indian defence electronics quality is accepted in markets where Indian manufacturing has no default advantage.

The 5G market's growth — global telecom infrastructure build-out — provides the commercial volume that subsidises Centum's high-reliability manufacturing overhead and funds the R&D that keeps its defence and space products current.

THE FACTORY FLOOR

Centum's Bangalore facility is a high-reliability electronics manufacturing environment: ESD-controlled assembly areas, automated optical inspection stations that examine every solder joint on every printed circuit board, X-ray inspection for ball grid array packages where solder joints are invisible after assembly, and conformal coating application that protects assemblies from moisture and contamination in field environments.

The qualification testing infrastructure — thermal cycling chambers, vibration tables, and altitude simulation chambers — subjects every new product design to the environmental stresses of its intended application before it is approved for production.

THE RESULTS

THE PLAYBOOK MOVE

Move 6 — Earn Global Validation: The Centum Adetel acquisition earned Centum European defence electronics certification — the most rigorous quality validation available to any electronics manufacturer.

THE LESSON

The Manufacturing Discipline Built for Space Is the Same Discipline That 5G Needs — If You Have the Courage to Apply It Commercially

Centum's space and defence quality standards — zero defects, full traceability, environmental qualification — are what 5G telecom infrastructure needs as it moves from experimental to critical communications infrastructure. The discipline that Centum built for ISRO becomes the competitive advantage for 5G supply. The investment in quality that the defence customer demanded is the moat that commercial customers increasingly value. Quality built for the hardest customer is quality that works for every customer.

For Your Factory

The quality standard you maintain for your most demanding customer — is it being applied to your less demanding customers in a way that creates differentiation? Or is it siloed in the premium segment while your commercial business operates to a lower standard?
