The Gurgaon ODM That Proved India Could Design and Make Electronics — Not Just Assemble Them
THE MOMENT
ODM. Original Design Manufacturer. Not original equipment manufacturer (OEM), who designs and brands the product. Not contract manufacturer (CM), who only assembles. ODM is the most valuable position in the electronics supply chain: the company that designs the product for its customer, manufactures it, and hands it over — with all the engineering done. The customer gets their branded product; VVDN keeps the design capability that makes the next product possible.
VVDN is India's leading ODM — a Gurgaon company with 3,000 engineers who design electronics products that global technology companies sell under their own brands. This is not assembly. This is engineering. And it represents a category of Indian electronics capability that most people — including most investors — do not know exists.

The Playbook Move
Move 4 — Reinvent the Product
VVDN reinvented the Indian electronics manufacturer's role — from assembler of imported designs to original designer of products that global companies sell under their own brands.
“We do not assemble other people's designs. We design, develop, and manufacture. That is the difference.”
— Vivek Bhatt, Founder, VVDN Technologies
THE COMPANY BEFORE
VVDN was founded in 2007 by Vivek Bhatt — an engineer who had experienced India's electronics manufacturing ecosystem from inside global companies and identified the gap between India's engineering talent and its product design capability. Indian engineers were designing products in India for foreign companies' R&D centres; the manufacturing was going elsewhere. VVDN proposed to keep both in India.
The networking hardware entry — designing and manufacturing WiFi routers and access points for global networking companies — established VVDN's ODM model. A networking company that wanted a new product line would engage VVDN to design the hardware, develop the firmware, and manufacture the product. VVDN's design IP was in the product; the customer's brand was on the box.
THE CRISIS
The ODM model's tension is intellectual property ownership: VVDN designs products but the customer brands them. Protecting VVDN's design IP while serving customers who might compete with each other (if VVDN reuses design elements across competing customers) requires careful IP management and contractual clarity.
The 5G infrastructure opportunity — designing and manufacturing 5G small cells and radio units — required capabilities at the intersection of RF engineering, embedded software, and manufacturing precision that VVDN had to build substantially from its networking heritage.
THE LEADERSHIP DECISION
VVDN's decision to invest in 5G product engineering — spending years developing the RF, baseband, and software capabilities that 5G radio hardware requires — was the technology leadership investment that positioned it for the largest electronics manufacturing opportunity of the decade.
The defence electronics entry — developing embedded systems for DRDO programmes — leveraged VVDN's engineering capability in a customer segment that values domestic design and manufacturing sovereignty above all other procurement criteria.
THE STRATEGIC PIVOT
VVDN's pivot was from a networking ODM to a multi-sector product engineering and manufacturing company — with the same ODM model applied to 5G infrastructure, surveillance cameras, IoT devices, EV charging, and defence electronics.
The Make in India alignment — PLI schemes for telecom equipment and electronics incentivising domestic design and manufacture — creates a policy environment that makes VVDN's ODM model commercially superior to imported alternatives for Indian market applications.
MARKET REACTION
Global networking and telecom companies have engaged VVDN for product engineering programmes — the ODM relationship being more valuable than pure EMS because VVDN's design capability reduces the customer's own R&D investment.
Indian government and telecom customers — who under PLI schemes need domestically designed products, not just domestically assembled ones — have found in VVDN one of the few Indian companies that can genuinely claim original design manufacturing.
THE FACTORY FLOOR
VVDN's Manesar (Gurgaon) manufacturing facility combines the electronics assembly capability of an EMS company with the design verification infrastructure of a product development company. RF test chambers for 5G radio unit validation, camera performance test rigs for surveillance product qualification, and IoT protocol testing environments are the test infrastructure that turns engineering designs into manufactured products.
The 3,000-person engineering team — hardware designers, firmware developers, mechanical engineers, and system testers — is VVDN's most valuable manufacturing asset. The factory makes the product; the engineers make the next product possible.
THE RESULTS
THE PLAYBOOK MOVE
Move 4 — Reinvent the Product: VVDN reinvented the Indian electronics manufacturer's role — from assembler of imported designs to original designer of products that global companies sell under their own brands.
THE LESSON
The Country That Only Assembles Other People's Designs Is a Factory. The Country That Designs Its Own Products Is an Industry.
India's electronics ambition will not be realised by assembling iPhones and Samsung TVs under contract. It will be realised by building companies like VVDN — that design the products, develop the firmware, validate the hardware, and manufacture the finished system. Design capability is the multiplier that converts assembly labour into engineering value. VVDN proved that Indian engineers can design world-class electronics products. The country's electronics future depends on scaling that proof into an industry.
In your manufacturing business, how much of what you produce is designed by your customers and how much by your own engineers? The shift from assembler to designer — even in a single product category — multiplies the value you capture and the defensibility of your market position.
