What You'll Learn

What a Skill is, how it differs from a one-off prompt, and how to turn a task you do repeatedly into something Claude does the same way every time.

Why This Matters

In Guide 10 you built reusable prompt frameworks — templates you paste in to get a consistent result. A Skill is the next step up: instead of pasting a framework into chat each time, you package the instructions once, and Claude loads them automatically whenever the task calls for it. You stop maintaining a prompt library by hand.

The Concept

A Skill is a folder of instructions and resources that Claude loads dynamically to complete a specific, specialised task the same way every time. Think of it as teaching Claude a procedure once — rather than re-explaining it in every chat, the way you had to with a plain prompt framework.

There are three kinds you'll come across:

  • Anthropic-built skills — ready-made, covering common tasks.
  • Skills you build yourself — your own repeatable procedures, written once.
  • Partner-built skills — made by other companies (for example, Notion or Figma) for working with their tools.
  • Skills are available on every plan — Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise — but they require code execution to be switched on in your settings before they'll run.

    Step-by-Step

  • Switch on code execution in your Claude settings (a one-time step — Skills won't run without it).
  • Look at the reusable prompt frameworks you built in Guide 10. Pick one you reach for often.
  • Turn it into a Skill: the clearer and more specific your instructions, the more consistent the output.
  • Give it a name that describes the task, not the client (for example, "Weekly client report formatter," not "Cameron stuff").
  • Test it on a real task and check the output matches what you'd have gotten from manually pasting your old framework.
  • Refine the instructions based on what Claude gets wrong or has to guess at.
  • Example

You format the same weekly status update for every client: a summary line, three bullet wins, one risk, next steps. Instead of pasting that structure into chat every Friday, you turn it into a Skill once. From then on, you just say "write this week's status update" and hand over the raw notes — Claude applies the exact structure automatically.

    Try This

Think of one task you do the same way, repeatedly, across different pieces of work (a report format, a content structure, a review checklist). Write out the steps you follow by hand, as if training a new hire — that's the core of a Skill.

    Copy This

    SKILL NAME: [SHORT, TASK-DESCRIBING NAME]

    WHAT THIS SKILL DOES:
[ONE SENTENCE — THE TASK IT HANDLES]

    WHEN TO USE IT:
[WHAT KIND OF REQUEST SHOULD TRIGGER THIS]

    STEP-BY-STEP PROCEDURE:
    1. [STEP ONE]
    2. [STEP TWO]
    3. [STEP THREE]

    OUTPUT FORMAT:
[EXACTLY HOW THE RESULT SHOULD BE STRUCTURED]

THINGS TO ALWAYS DO / NEVER DO:
    - Always [RULE]
    - Never [RULE]

    Common Mistakes

  • Writing vague instructions ("make it good") instead of the exact steps you'd give a person.
  • Forgetting to enable code execution, then assuming Skills "don't work."
  • Building a Skill for a one-off task instead of something you'll actually repeat.
  • Never testing the Skill on a real task before relying on it.
  • Level-Up Tip

Check what Anthropic-built and partner-built skills are already available before writing your own — you may not need to build one from scratch.

    Action Checklist

○Turn on code execution in settings
○Pick one repeatable task from your Guide 10 prompt frameworks
○Write it out as a clear, step-by-step procedure
○Build it as a Skill and test it on a real task
○Refine based on the first real result
