What You'll Learn

What an Artifact is, when to reach for one instead of a plain chat reply, and how to use them for structured or interactive outputs.

Why This Matters

Not everything Claude makes for you belongs buried in a chat thread. A long document, a piece of code, or an interactive tool is easier to read, reuse and share when it's pulled out of the back-and-forth and given its own space. That's what Artifacts are for.

The Concept

An Artifact takes something Claude makes for you — a document, code, a website, an interactive tool — and turns it into a self-contained piece of content in its own panel, separate from the chat. You can keep iterating on it directly, or share it on its own.

Artifacts are available on every plan, but they require "Cloud code execution and file creation" to be enabled in your settings. Some advanced capabilities — using templates, or connecting an artifact to other apps — are paid-plan features.

Step-by-Step

  • Enable "Cloud code execution and file creation" in your Claude settings.
  • When you ask for something substantial and self-contained — a document, a webpage, a tool, a piece of code — Claude will often open it as an Artifact automatically.
  • Review it in its own panel, separate from the chat.
  • Ask for changes conversationally ("make the second section shorter," "add a button that resets it") — Claude iterates on the Artifact in place.
  • Share or reuse the Artifact once it's in the shape you want.
  • Example

You've written a project plan in chat and want something your team can actually use day-to-day, not just read once. You ask Claude to "turn this plan into a one-page interactive checklist." Claude creates an Artifact — a clean, clickable checklist laid out by phase — instead of just reformatting the plan as more chat text. You can keep refining it ("group by owner instead of by week") without losing the version you already have.

    Try This

Take something you already asked Claude for recently in plain chat — a plan, a summary, a piece of copy — and ask it to turn that into a structured Artifact instead (a checklist, a one-pager, a simple interactive tool). Notice how much easier it is to work with on its own.

    Copy This

    Turn this into an Artifact:
    [PASTE OR DESCRIBE THE CONTENT]

Format it as: [DOCUMENT / CHECKLIST / SIMPLE INTERACTIVE TOOL / WEBPAGE]
Structure it by: [HOW YOU WANT IT ORGANISED]
Keep / change: [ANYTHING TO KEEP AS-IS OR ADJUST FROM THE ORIGINAL]

    Common Mistakes

  • Leaving code execution disabled, then not understanding why Artifacts aren't appearing.
  • Re-pasting the whole thing into chat to make a small change, instead of just asking Claude to edit the Artifact directly.
  • Expecting template or app-connection features on a free account — those are paid-plan capabilities.
  • Level-Up Tip

If you're building the same kind of Artifact repeatedly (the same report layout, the same checklist style), that's a strong sign it's worth turning into a Skill (Guide 12).

    Action Checklist

○Enable Cloud code execution and file creation in settings
○Turn one recent chat output into a structured Artifact
○Practise asking for changes conversationally rather than re-pasting
○Note which Artifact types you reach for most
