Avalon Technologies
The Chennai EMS Company That Found Its Altitude in Aerospace and Clean Energy
THE MOMENT
Chennai's electronics manufacturing ecosystem — built over three decades around automotive, IT hardware, and now EMS — is producing companies that are competing with the world's best contract manufacturers in the segments that matter most: aerospace, clean energy, and medical electronics. Avalon Technologies is among the most credible of these companies — a Chennai-based EMS provider that has earned aerospace qualification, clean energy scale, and medical device standards simultaneously.
Avalon's story is about the discipline required to compete in the hardest segments of electronics manufacturing — and the commercial rewards that discipline earns when customers in demanding applications cannot find acceptable alternatives.

The Playbook Move
Move 6 — Earn Global Validation
AS9100 aerospace certification — earned through years of process investment — is Avalon's global validation that no marketing can substitute for.
“We built our quality for rockets and radars. Our clean energy customers chose us because of it.”
— Avalon Technologies leadership
THE COMPANY BEFORE
Avalon was founded in 1999 by Krishnamoorthy Shankar in Chennai — the south Indian city that combines engineering talent from its IIT and technical universities with a manufacturing ecosystem built around automotive and electronics.
The aerospace entry — building sub-assemblies for DRDO and ISRO — established the AS9100 quality certification and the traceability discipline that aerospace applications require. AS9100 is the aerospace-specific quality management standard; achieving and maintaining it requires the process documentation, configuration management, and first-article inspection protocols that distinguish aerospace manufacturing from general electronics assembly.
THE CRISIS
The clean energy electronics market — solar inverter assemblies, battery management systems — was growing rapidly but also attracting intense competition from larger Chinese and Indian EMS companies. Avalon's differentiation in this segment needed to be quality and engineering support, not price.
The box build expansion — taking responsibility for complete system assembly rather than just board-level assembly — required Avalon to develop skills in cable harness fabrication, mechanical integration, and system-level testing that PCB assembly does not develop.
THE LEADERSHIP DECISION
Avalon's multi-segment quality investment — maintaining AS9100 for aerospace, ISO 13485 for medical, and IEC standards for industrial simultaneously — was the deliberate quality infrastructure investment that gave Avalon the credentials to compete across the highest-value EMS segments.
The IPO in 2022 — raising capital for facility expansion and technology investment — gave Avalon the balance sheet for the large programme commitments that its growth ambition required.
THE STRATEGIC PIVOT
Avalon's pivot was from a specialised aerospace EMS company to a high-reliability multi-sector EMS provider — with aerospace as the quality anchor and clean energy, medical, and rail as the growth vectors.
The EV and clean energy growth — battery management systems, onboard chargers, and power electronics assemblies — is the segment with the highest growth rate in Avalon's portfolio and the one most aligned with India's clean energy manufacturing ambition.
MARKET REACTION
Aerospace customers — particularly DRDO and the growing private space sector — have found in Avalon a credible domestic EMS partner for the electronics assemblies that space and defence programmes require.
The clean energy sector's growth — both domestic and export — has driven Avalon's revenue at rates that its aerospace business alone could not sustain, validating the multi-sector diversification strategy.
THE FACTORY FLOOR
Avalon's Chennai facility is organised by quality segment — aerospace assemblies in AS9100-certified areas with their specific process controls, medical assemblies in ISO 13485 areas, and clean energy assemblies in the high-volume areas configured for efficient throughput.
The cable harness fabrication capability — manufacturing the wiring assemblies that connect PCBs to sensors, actuators, and power supplies in complete system assemblies — is the mechanical complement to Avalon's electronic assembly capability.
THE RESULTS
THE PLAYBOOK MOVE
Move 6 — Earn Global Validation: AS9100 aerospace certification — earned through years of process investment — is Avalon's global validation that no marketing can substitute for.
THE LESSON
The EMS Company That Qualifies for the Hardest Segments Earns the Most Loyal Customers in Every Segment
Aerospace qualification cost Avalon years of investment and engineering discipline. That investment earned it DRDO and ISRO customers whose switching cost is enormous. It also earned the credibility that clean energy and medical customers use to evaluate EMS partners — because a company qualified for aerospace can be trusted for any application. The hardest qualification opens the easiest doors.
What is the most demanding quality certification in your industry — the one that requires the most investment and earns the most loyal customers? Are you pursuing it, or is the investment deterring you from the market position it would create?
